Milo & Coco

Ragdoll | Adult

We brought Coco and Milo as babies into our home in late 2019. They were beautiful blue point ragdoll kittens, the first kittens we’d ever had, and our 8-year-old and 5-year-old were overjoyed to welcome them to the family. They were perfect in every way, exactly what we imagined and added so much joy to our lives. They were very curious, bright, healthy, happy, and settled into our home very quickly. They had no behavioural or health problems whatsoever, and from day 1 were just a delight.

They were being fed a combination of supermarket branded wet and dry food when they were still living with their breeder, so we kept them on that same diet in order to not upset their tummies. However, things were not all plain sailing as they frequently had bouts of diarrhoea. Approximately three or four times a week, they had toilet troubles that resulted in our carpets and furniture being soiled as the kittens desperately tried to clean themselves up. Not to mention, we had to constantly bathe them after these episodes which was extremely distressing for Coco and Milo. We felt on “high alert” all the time, feeling that someone had to constantly watch them in case they had diarrhoea again.

We had to have them in our bedroom every night and at least once a week, were awoken in the middle of the night to clean up after the mess and bathe one or both of the kittens, which was very tiring and frustrating. We wondered if this was normal with them being kittens, and hoped it would clear up as they grew. However, this continued from the time that we brought them home from the breeder, until they were approximately 7 months old. At this point, we were totally exhausted and frustrated with the situation, and decided to take them to the vet.

The vet examined them and found nothing wrong, but suggested a change of food to a “vet” brand that was supposedly very mild and suitable for sensitive stomachs. Finally, we thought we could see the light at the end of the tunnel! We were excited that maybe this could be the solution to the problem. However, we were somewhat dismayed by the price of this food, as it was about two times the price of what we were currently spending! But we decided to give it a try because we couldn’t see any other solution, and we couldn’t keep going with the constant cleaning up of carpets, and bathing of the poor kittens.

Coco and Milo started on the new “vet” food straight away, and instantly our problem increased dramatically. Now every single time they went to the litter tray, they were producing extremely liquid and foul smelling diarrhoea. The vet assured us that this was due to the change of food and that it would clear up, but this new phase of even worse diarrhoea continued for a whole month.

I was desperately seeking answers and scouring the internet and cat forums online, when I came across “raw feeding”. After doing some research we were willing to give it a try and started Coco and Milo on LUNA & me. They were now 8 months old. Despite reading that they may not like the taste of a raw diet straight away, Coco and Milo wolfed everything down. I guess they were young enough to transition smoothly. And I am not kidding when I say it was like a miracle cure.

Literally overnight, their stool hardened to a normal consistency and all odour completely disappeared. We couldn’t believe our eyes. It was so obvious that the raw diet had completely cured whatever was wrong with their stomach before, and we have never looked back. Today they are thriving 5 year olds. Their stools are normal, their fur is shiny, they enjoy their food very much, and are very happy.

When we visit our vet, they still don’t seem convinced that a raw diet is the way to go, but our results speak for themselves and I can’t see us ever going back. Even the vet can’t deny that Coco and Milo are super healthy and are a optimum weight too.
